Rare footage of an otter feasting on fish by the Nujiang River was captured on camera by a township worker from Gongshan Dulong and Nu Autonomous County in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Monday.
Cameraman Xiao Jiansheng was lucky enough to spot the elusive animal as it made a splash in the river, diving for fish.
The video showed the otter leisurely swimming and then effortlessly diving to the bottom of the river. Soon after, it resurfaced after having caught a large fish, which it enjoyed on a rock near the river bank.
According to experts, the otter in the video is a Eurasian otter, a second-level national key protected wild animal. The otter is one of the top predators in freshwater ecosystems and an indicator species for the integrity of river wetland ecosystems.
With local government strengthening the ecological protection of the Nujiang River, the local river ecosystem has been effectively protected in recent years. Otters were once hunted to the brink of extinction, but in recent years have made a comeback due to conservation efforts and improving water quality.
